RTJ Ross Bridge
Description:
Located in Hoover (just outside Birmingham), Ross Bridge is widely regarded as one of the premier destinations on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail—and often cited as one of the trail’s most spectacular and challenging courses. Opened in 2005, it’s the newest addition to the RTJ collection and stands out for its epic scale, dramatic landscaping, and integration with a luxurious on-site resort.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. (with input from Roger Rulewich), Ross Bridge evokes an old-world parkland style while delivering modern championship demands. It’s famous as one of the longest golf courses in the world—stretching to 8,191 yards from the back (Black) tees (par 72), making it the 5th-longest globally at one point. Don’t let that intimidate: five sets of tees range down to 5,312 yards, ensuring playability for all levels.
- Key Stats:
- Black: 8,191 yards | Rating 78.4 | Slope 147
- Purple: ~7,500 yards | Rating 75.0 | Slope 140
- Forward tees: ~5,300 yards
The layout winds through rolling terrain in Shannon Valley, with ten holes playing along two large connected lakes featuring a stunning 80-foot waterfall between holes 3 and 12. Expect massive bunkers, wide fairways (generous landing areas), forced carries over water, and elevation changes. Signature holes include the par-3 11th (played entirely over water from an elevated tee) and the dramatic closing stretches with lake views.
Golfers rave about the impeccable conditioning, strategic variety, and scenic beauty. It hosted a PGA Champions Tour event from 2006–2010 and consistently earns high marks (4.6+ on GolfPass, Top 100 public recognition).
Ross Bridge is ideal as a base for Birmingham-area RTJ exploration (pair with Oxmoor Valley’s Ridge and Valley courses). Easy access from Birmingham Airport (20-30 minutes).
Whether you’re chasing length off the tips or enjoying a relaxed resort round, Ross Bridge delivers a bucket-list experience with Southern hospitality.
